CHANCE ENCOUNTERS by Muhammad Thamrin

After receiving a sudden and unprecedented influx of migrants last year, Europe, particularly Germany is facing tremendous task of housing and integrating her new citizens into existing social and physical environment. The demand for housing will outstrip supply for many years to come. The existing housing types may also need radical adjustment to cope with the new demography.

Current thinking on migrant housing generally leans towards placing migrants among existing settlements to foster integration and to avoid creation of exclusive enclaves detached from society in general. This scheme is an exercise in accommodating large numbers of diverse population into existing German neighborhood.

The scheme envisions a new diverse housing located within an old neighborhood of six-storey perimeter block typically found in European urban centers. At the outside, the scheme closely obeys the tight perimeters to establish continuity with the existing fabrics and scale. Inside, a higher density is packed into a series of vibrant courtyards and in-between spaces that facilitate individual expressions, chance meetings and casual encounters.

The courtyards becomes the glue that binds the housing’s disparate components and occupants together. Commerce - a noble pursuit practiced by many of the new arrivals - will find immediate outlet to flourish in the courtyard.
